Familiar with the name of Miyamoto Musashi? For those who study Japanese culture or martial arts must have known about the legend of this greatest sword-master ever. His book, Go Rin No Sho (The Book of Five Rings), that contains his idealism both in sword-fighting and the way of life, not just famous in Japan, but also throughout western continent.


Ganryūjima (formerly known as Fūnajima) is an island in Japan located between Honshū and Kyūshū. This was the place where Miyamoto Musashi staged a duel with his arch-rival Sasaki Kojiro in 1612.

Musashi, which held a boken (wooden sword that he crafted himself), killed Kojiro which used an approx. 2 m length iron sword. After the duel, this island is called Ganryūjima, in respect of Kojiro's sword style, Ganryu.

On this boat-shaped island are a few monuments as well as facilities for public gatherings such as an annual tug-of-war. Along the west coast is a walking path, while the other side remains fenced off. Although in the vicinity there are port facilities and factories, the scenic Ganryūjima Island is covered in greenery and is a precious natural space within the Kanmon Straits.

Ganryūjima, has an area of 10.4 hectares, is accessible via ferry from Shimonoseki Harbor, but you will need a reservation for a ferry pass. Fare of round trip for an adult is JPY 1000.

For you who like to travel to a historical places, museum for example, you might consider to visit Ganryūjima. You can also stay in Shimonoseki if you want to take a trip to this island. In this industrial area, you'll find many luxury hotels, namely Marin Hotel, Tokyo Inn, and Plaza Hotel. The standard rate will be around JPY 5,000 - 10,000.
