Cancun, located in the east coast of Mexico, near the Carribean Seais one of the most exotic places in the world. The white sand of the beaches and turquoise sea attracts hundreds of thousand tourist every year, but they are also causing damage to marine life.

Usually, local government held corals restoration projects by built artificial reefs. But how if these hand-made reefs is taking a form of human sculpture? This will become the biggest underwater museum in the world, and going to be placed at the National Park West Coast of Isla Mujeres in Cancun.

Professional underwater sculptor, Jason deCaires Taylor, led a project to built approximately 400 sculptures and will then be sunk within this National Park on the barren areas of seabed at various depths. This ongoing project started since November last year.

One of the greatest benefits of artificial reefs is that they have lifted the pressure off natural reefs which, over the past few decades, have been over-fished and over-visited,” said the British artist. “By diverting attention to artificial reefs, natural reefs have now been given a greater chance to repair and to regenerate.

The figures will be made out of PH neutral concrete to encourage coral reefs and marine life to grow. Due to the growth, their appearance will constantly change with time. These underwater museum hopefully will encourage scuba divers away from the damaged coral reefs in the West Coast National Park.

Although this site would be great for snorkeling and attract many more tourist, it has one downside. Those sculptures are creepy, and look like a dead body. Few hundreds years from now, divers will wondering what really happened in this place long long time ago? Maybe the artist should combined it with different shapes. Just kidding though...
